Promotion of\u00c2\u00a0the four performances received a boost from the consulate of the People&#8217;s Republic of China, though that may\u00c2\u00a0not have been its\u00c2\u00a0original intent.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Chinese consulate attempted to force the cancellation of the shows by pressuring the national theater and Spain&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cultura\/2014\/04\/06\/5341809bca47413b218b4579.html\">According to Spain&#8217;s El Mundo<\/a>, the consulate used\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153the same forcefulness with which it prohibits inconvenient culture in its\u00c2\u00a0own country.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>In a personal visit, the consulate asked the theater to cancel the performances on the grounds that it\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153went against the interests of the Chinese Communist Party.&#8221; To the foreign ministry, the consulate suggested that failure to cancel the performance might &#8220;compromise&#8221; Spain-China relations, including economic ties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The consulate further claimed that Shen Yun&#8217;s members were\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153illiterate and crazy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Carlos Iglesias, a human rights attorney famous for <a href=\"http:\/\/ifjc.org\/node\/1929\">indicting high-ranking Chinese Communist Party\u00c2\u00a0officials including former chief Jiang Zemin for genocide and torture<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0under Spain&#8217;s universal jurisdiction laws, has sued the Chinese consulate.<\/p>\n<p>The consulate&#8217;s interference attempt drew public attention in the Catalonian capital.
